Presenter: Krishna C. Jha, Innovative Scheduling
Topic: Optimization Problems in Rail Transportation
Abstract: Transportation is one of the most vital services in the modern economy. With increasing global competitiveness and customer requirements, the transportation industry must improve the planning and scheduling of its resources. In particular, the railroad sector of the transportation industry needs computerized planning and scheduling tools so that it can improve its efficiency and profitability. The rail transportation industry is very rich in terms of the planning and scheduling problems that can be modeled and solved using mathematical optimization techniques with significant potential savings in costs. The speaker has developed planning and scheduling algorithms as well as has led the development of software for the railroad sector. In this talk, he will present important optimization problems in the railroad industry and will explain solution approach adopted for couple of them.
