University of Florida

ITE Leadership Conference. The STRIDE Center co-sponsored the Student Leadership Summit hosted by the UF Gator ITE student chapter on February 9-11, 2018. The Summit was held in conjunction with the Florida Section ITE (FSITE) Winter Workshop. Students from universities within the Southeastern U.S. were invited to attend. Dr. Lily Elefteriadou spoke about I-STREET during the FSITE workshop and was one of the plenary session speakers at the Student Leadership Summit. I-STREET is a real-world testbed for implementing advanced transportation technologies on local streets, roads and freeways.

WTS Symposium. The STRIDE Center co-sponsored the WTS Symposium on Smart Cities, held on April 4, 2018 at the University of Florida campus. The event was hosted by the WTS Florida Gator Student Chapter and was also co-sponsored by Gannett Fleming, DRMP, Dr. Ria Kontou, UF 2016 and the UF Transportation Institute. This event was attended by more than 50 people and included invited panelists from the City of Gainesville, Florida Department of Transportation, Gannett Fleming and the University of Florida, who spoke about a connected city and campus. The Citadel

Dr. Dimitra Michalaka was nominated as Chair of the Engineering Graphics Division and Secretary of the Civil Engineering and Professional Skills Division, during the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Southeast Section (SE) in Daytona Beach, Fla..

Dr. Kweku Brown was nominated as Vice Chair of the Engineering Graphics Division, during the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Southeast Section (SE) in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Dr. William J. Davis was appointed D. Graham Copeland Professor of Civil Engineering, Chair of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Director of Construction Engineering at The Citadel.

ITE Student Chapter Established. The Citadel established a Student Chapter of the Institution of Transportation Engineers on February 2, 2018, with 16 members and various faculty advisers. The chapter held an inaugural kick off meeting and charter celebration. This event was attended by 17 students, two faculty members, the Dean of the Citadel School of Engineering, and two distinguished ITE life members.

University of Alabama at Birmingham

Dr. Virginia Sisiopiku served on the UAB Mentoring Academy for Faculty panel on April 2, 2018. The panel was part of a Mentoring Week Program that provided UAB faculty members the tools needed to guide their graduate students and trainees in becoming successful in their pursuits.

Dr. Virginia Sisiopiku served as representative of the UAB Sustainability Strategic Planning Committee on Transportation at the UAB Sustainability Strategic Plan Open House on April 28, 2018. The event solicited feedback by UAB students and employees regarding initiatives in support of sustainability objectives. Transportation initiatives considered include: 1) drafting new policies to reduce solo commuting to campus; 2) improving incentives for multi-modal commuting (e.g. ride sharing programs, public transit etc.); and 3) the use of technologies to improve transportation services (e.g., electronic signs, apps, etc.).
